Nursing training: state of affairs on the college facet

For the Ministry of Education and Research, the approach of nursing education to the university “goes in the direction of history”, even if it has to remain professionalizing. In this second part of the nursing education panorama, Actusoins examines the subject through the end of the university telescope.

Nursing education: Degrees getting closer to university

After the award of the diploma admission to the state diploma in 2009 and the agreement of all IFSI with the universities (at that time the foundation of the training university, the IPA) began in 2009 a second stage of the university training for nursing staff 2020.

The rapprochement between IFSI and universities, but also between medical and paramedical training, has been growing for three years with the experimental program launched by decree of May 2020.

It will be launched in three consecutive waves, starting in September 2020, 2021 and 2022. A total of 26 projects were submitted by 23 universities (including nine in 2021 and seven and in 2022).

Regarding initial training (first cycle), ten projects relate to bridges that allow entry to the second year of IFSI by students in PASS-L.AS who have validated 60 ECTS under certain conditions.

Gates in the other direction, for training in medicine, maieutics, dentistry and pharmacy, also exist, but they affect a much more limited number of places at the moment, the ministry says.

23 universities are experimenting

Eight further experiments lead students in the IFSI to a double diploma: At the end of the three years, ESI receive the state diploma and a license (in addition to the “license degree” of the DEI).

This double degree represents a potential advantage: the Ministry of Higher Education expects that the additional training associated with the granting of a license within the framework of the experiments will allow students who have obtained this double degree to better succeed in pursuing a master’s degree.

The experiments also refer to the second cycle with nine double degree projects for students in specialization studies (Iade, Ibode), advanced practice or managerial. The ministry also states that they are taking a master’s degree in health, health technology, public health, management, management of administrations and companies and in educational sciences at the same time.

This experimental phase lasts six years for both the first and second cycles. The projects will therefore be evaluated at the end of the 2025-2026 academic year. The results of these assessments will provide insight into whether or not certain formulas will be made permanent.

University nurses: number unknown

In addition to experimenting, holders of a DE can also study in a master’s degree and then do a doctorate.

Some do, but the Ministry of Higher Education does not know their number: all universities would have to be consulted to know the number of state-certified doctoral students, and all masters heads (very many) to find out who is the follow one… The degrees they obtained outside the university circle (like DE) are in fact not listed in their matriculation file…

Likewise, some IDEs teach at the university without their degree in nursing being known.

On the other hand, since the establishment of the qualification section for nursing sciences of the National Council of Universities, the “CNU 92”, in 2019, the very first positions for teachers and researchers have been created: eight lecturer positions and one professor position. universities. It’s not much, but the industry is young.

Some nurses already working in research have already applied. However, a potential obstacle to the development of these positions lies in the fact that these teacher-researchers, in addition to conducting research in public health, are required to conduct research in institutional care, the ministry says.

However, as these posts are only assigned to the teaching staff of the Department of Higher Education and Research, their holders have no connection to a nursing service and must enter into an agreement with a nursing facility.

In order to make these professions more attractive, a reflection on double membership, as it exists in the medical field, should be promptly initiated.
