The College of Mons will increase its consideration to the well being of Hainuyans

The province of Hainaut, the most populous in Wallonia and the second in the country, faces undeniable social difficulties that affect the health of people who are already economically weak. The mortality rate in Hainaut is 5% higher than in Wallonia and 17% higher than in Belgium. Life expectancy for men is three years shorter than in Belgium and for women 18 months shorter than in the rest of the country. In Hainaut, more than anywhere else, the health challenge is significant.

Aware of this reality, the “Raoul Warocqué Foundation for Medical Research in Hainaut” intends to put the health of Hainaut at the heart of its priorities. “The University of Mons, but also the entire province, now has an effective tool dedicated to maintaining and improving the health of Hainuy residents.”communicates the UMons.

Promote and support research

“Since the founding of its medical school fifty years ago, UMons has played an important role in the healthcare field, whether through the quality education it offers or through its cutting-edge research – conducted alone or through already existing strong collaborations with the hospital network – in the areas of medicine, but also pharmacy and biomedicine.

With the creation of the Raoul Warocqué Foundation, UMons intends to support the dynamism of research in cutting-edge fields and, on the other hand, to create the conditions for excellent research in the province of Hainaut. In addition, it wishes to stimulate interest in research among young doctors and paramedics by awarding grants and research contracts to teams working in Hainaut hospitals or within the framework of research programs initiated by members of these institutions.

“This foundation will allow us to significantly reinforce all actions that UMONS carries out in the health sector. It will also help to intensify our already numerous and fruitful collaborations with the medical world and the hospital sector, where we are already well represented in Hainaut.”assures Philippe Dubois, rector, who links this initiative to the recently submitted application for a master’s degree in medicine in Hainaut.

Concretely, the funds raised in the form of donations or other funds are allocated to local projects aimed at improving the quality of healthcare and further strengthening the expertise of practitioners in the service of citizens. “The donors will thus contribute to the fight against the emergence of pathologies indirectly linked to social problems such as obesity, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes… but also to aspects related to prevention and addiction. You will participate in the acquisition of state-of-the-art equipment aimed at research innovations for patient care or at more fundamental research projects. ”
