It’s common for people to add a chemical stripper, brightener, or cleaning solution to the pressure washer. Most pressure washers will have a nozzle designed for a cleaning solution. Be sure to choose a cleaner suitable for wood, then mix the product according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
Spray the solution on the wood, covering the entire surface you plan to pressure wash, then let the solution sit for a few minutes. Once you’re done with the cleaning solution, be sure to rinse the product out of the pressure washer itself as well.
How much psi do I need to clean patios and driveways?
In general, a 3 GPM, 3000 psi pressure washer is ideal for cleaning patios and driveways. Use the tip with the widest angle to prevent the surface of these hardscapes from degrading. Using a pressure washer on these surfaces can make brick and concrete look like new.
First, start cleaning driveways and patios from one end and keep the tip approximately 12 inches from the surface of the landscaping to minimize streaking and prevent damage the surface. Clean the surface in a steady sweeping motion and use a push broom or wide spray nozzle to wash debris from the surface.
How to strip your deck using a pressure washer
First of all, you need the right pressure washer. We recommend around 2400 PSI for the medium deck. This makes the job easy without damaging most woods. Start by using the standard spray nozzle to get rid of any dirt, leaves, and other easy debris. Then switch to a chemical sprayer and clean the deck and any surrounding fence with your favorite cleaning solution. Finish with a full coat and let it settle into the decking wood for a few minutes.
If your deck is very dirty, you may need to perform a deep cleaning with a narrower jet. Next, move your wand in a stroking type motion. This will help loosen grime, dirt or paint. However, do not spray directly. The zero degree angle can end up drawing lines in the wood, so we recommend using a stroking type motion. Then rinse the deck with a round of clear water.
Pressure Washer Rules
Finally, let’s review the rules of pressure washing. First, it’s important to note that pressure washers are nothing like hoses. So you can’t expect to use it as such.
If you do this, the wooden planks will eventually wear out. There are three words to remember when using a pressure washer: keep moving!
