Youngsters’s questions and ministerial solutions to correspondence college

Some children enjoy being able to stay in bed longer, only half dressing, and having time to play between classes. Others only dream of going back to school and being surrounded by their friends again. Correspondence school mixes up the lives of students, whether they are in preschool, elementary school or high school. The duty gave them the floor this week to voice their concerns. Education Minister Jean-François Roberge agreed to answer their questions. Interview by Magdaline Boutros.

This is the third year we have homeschooling periods: will it be the same every year until I finish school?

Edward, 10 years old

We all hope not! We know that being at school, learning, seeing your teacher and your friends is much more interesting… But if the virus becomes too dangerous and spreads too much, we have to limit our contacts as much as possible and that is why you are asked to do the school remotely. Hopefully the spread of the virus will be brought under control soon.

Why do you say it’s not good for us to spend our day on vacation in front of a screen, but you don’t mind if it’s for homeschooling?

Achilles, 10 years old

Going to school is super important and at the moment the virus is preventing us from giving you classes. So we have to use computers! But even with distance learning, it’s important not to spend the day in front of screens. Make the most of your breaks and vacations: move, get out, draw, read a book!

If we continue school at home for several weeks, we could have fewer classes [au secondaire] ? It’s really hard to stay focused all day.

Matilda, 12 years old

We know it’s difficult to spend several hours in front of the screens and to stay focused. But it is also important at home to see all the learning opportunities that are planned for the courses. These achievements will be critical for the rest of your school career and for your adult life! If we all follow the health rules and continue to protect ourselves, the virus will be less present and everyone can go back to school.

My eyes hurt and my head hurts when I study on the computer all day. What can I do to feel better?

Kolin, 10 years old

After a good working session in front of the computer, it is important to take breaks, exercise and rest! Try doing something other than sitting in front of the screen after class, picking up a book, drawing, playing outside: it will do you good!

I miss my teacher and my friends very much. I find it difficult to stay at home…

Alice, 6 years old

You are not the only one ! We all miss seeing our family, friends and colleagues. But the virus is making too many people sick, which is why it’s important to limit our contacts, get vaccinated and follow health rules. If we all do the right things, the virus will be less present and we will finally be able to see each other again. I am also excited !

I like online school less. If we can’t go back to class, could we do it differently? In a bubble, in the park, in the yard… Or each in turn at school, wearing a mask, or two or three if need be.

Renaud, 10 years old

At the moment so many people are sick that it is important to see each other as little as possible and to limit our contacts in order not to spread the virus. On the other hand, the good weather returns and we can go back to school and see our friends!

Why I only have one hour of classes a day [en 1

année] ? I would like to have more classes and I would also like to be able to have dinner and snacks with my friends online so I can have a conversation with them…

Raphael, 6 years old

It would be possible to arrange an online date with your friends! You could ask your parents to plan something. And when you’re taking classes, don’t forget that you can keep learning all day long. Do you have books at home that could help you with reading and studying? You could share what you’ve learned with your friends over dinner!
